Share the Sail was created by Bob Bitchin & Jody as they did their world cruise. After they created Latitudes & Attitudes Magazine they continued it thru 2011. Before that, Captain Alan Olson, Founder of The Call of the Sea Foundation has been doing a similar thing since the 1970’s, and is where Bob learned the cruising lifestyle.
Share the Sail is a very simple concept. We charter a number of boats through our advertisers, and set up a sail-plan in some of the most beautiful sailing spots in the world. You can then reserve a space to joining on the adventure. We take care of arranging for the boats, The cost of the boat, insurance, fuel and provisioning (usually partial provisioning dependent on the location). We then arrange to have one of our staff members or an experienced skipper to be on each boat. But the sailing, navigation, and cooking are shared by all on board.
We have arranged these events all over the world. We have had numerous STS adventures in Tahiti, The Virgin Islands, The Grenadines , Australia, New Zealand, Tonga, Greece, The San Juan Islands, Antigua and other cruising areas.
We usually schedule these events to coincide with cruising events, and/or the preferred season for cruising the area we visit. The events usually run about a week, but in some cases will run 10 days if there is a lot of travel involved.
What type of boats?
When available we offer a choice of catamaran, monohull or power cruisers. The boats usually are in the 40-50’ size range. It is dependent on what boats are available in the location we cruise.
What’s it cost?
This is a tough one, as prices vary from place to place. Also boats are more costly in some areas. There is also the option of a couple sharing a cabin, as opposed to a single person in a cabin. We try to keep the costs as low as we can, while still providing good boats and fun locations. The rates DO NOT include transportation to or from the boats. Air and lodging are not included, so you can choose flights and hotels in your budget range.
Sample Cabin Costs (Includes the boat, insurance, fuel, and partial provisioning):
7 day cruise, double occupancy cabin $4,200 ($2,100 per person)
7 day cruise single occupancy cabin $3,250 per person
We ask for a $500 deposit (refundable up to 60 day prior to the event) 1/2 60 days prior to the event, and the final 1/2 due 30 days prior to the event. Cruisers will be contacted by email for cabin/boat assignments and more details.
First Event: The San Juan Islands in August 7-13
Every year for the past 16 years we have sponsored a Cruiser’s Weekend in the San Juan’s (WA) where hundreds of boaters gather, most in pirate gear, for a weekend of fun and camaraderie. This year it is being hosted by the Anacortes Yacht Harbor. The Share The Sail participants will cruise the San Juan’s for five days prior to the event, ending with the boats in Anacortes Yacht Harbor, where the Cruiser’s Weekend takes place. Live music, dancing, games and more fun than you’d believe.
